5:30 pm: Spring Picnic and Telescope workshop5:30 pm: Spring Picnic and Telescope workshop – May is here, this will be our last meeting until September. Our star parties will continue throughout the summer along with outreach activities. This year we're doing the same as before with a picnic/potluck inside, we're held this meeting outside in past years only to have to deal with high temperatures. Members and guests Only (not open to the public) Membership in the club includes wives / significant others and children living with you Meeting Location: Beardsley Recreation Center Date: May 7th Time: 6:00PM **** Meal Agenda The club will be providing Wraps of different varieties, coffee and water. We'll also provide plates and utensils. We're asking the membership to bring the following depending on the first letter of your last name. A - G : Salads H - N: Side dishes O - Z: Deserts Meeting Agenda: Astronomy swap meet: If you have Astronomy related stuff , bring it in and try to sell it. Weather permitting; when you arrive make your way to our solar telescope to observe the Sun before it sets. Meal - Enjoy your meal while watching a slide show of images taken by our members from the 2024 Solar Eclipse, Speaker 1: Kevin Schindler on "What is happening at Lowell Observatory" Program Title: Lowell Observatory New Kemper Foundation Astronomy Discovery Center Program Description: This November, Lowell Observatory is opening its visitor center of the future, the dazzling Kemper Foundation Astronomy Discovery Center. This three-story, 40,000-square-foot facility features the Universe Theater with an LED screen measuring 25-feet high by 110-feet wide, a rooftop planetarium that incorporates the famous dark skies of Flagstaff, interactive exhibit hall for guests of all ages, and much more. Speaker Description: Kevin Schindler is the historian and public information officer at Lowell Observatory - where he has worked for 29 years - and an active member of the Flagstaff history and science communities. He has authored eight books and contributes a bi-weekly astronomy column, “View from Mars Hill”, for the Arizona Daily Sun newspaper. In May 2023, he served as Astronomer in Residence at the Grand Canyon. Fun fact: Kevin has both a fossil crab and asteroid named after him. Speaker 2: John Hiatt Subject: Short talk on the possiable NOVA in Coma Berenices over the summer Telescope workshop: If you have a telescope that you need help with or needs some adjustments bring it to the meeting, we’ll be setting them up outside or in.
